Friends Deliver Meals on Wheels trucks to BOC

(Lawrenceville, Ga., June 15, 2010) – On June 15, Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services (Friends) presented keys of two brand new, fully equipped trucks to the Board of Commissioners. These trucks will replace two existing ones used to deliver over 115,000 meals to seniors in their homes on an annual basis.

Mary Ann Lewis receives meals and is quick to say, “The Meals on Wheels program is such a godsend to me. I receive a balanced meal, food that I could not afford, and is so convenient to heat. This help is so vital to people like me who are disabled and elderly”.

Friends is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer-run organization which is dedicated to raise funds to privately support or supplement select senior programs in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The organization has already purchased four Meals on Wheels trucks and two homemaking service vehicles for Gwinnett County Senior Services and is committed to replace the vehicles as needed.

Private donations and fundraising efforts such as their annual Silent Auction have allowed Friends to make this possible; sponsor several elderly clients for yearly meals service, and provide emergency assistance. This year, Friends has also donated $65,000 to supplement the cost of home delivered meals which eliminated 75 seniors from the waiting list.
